Matilda, a spin-out from Oxford University (which holds a 5% share), was founded by three individuals, two of whom hold PhDs. They developed a device worn behind the ears like a hearing aid, which displays brainwaves on a screen. AI analyzes these brainwaves, which users can influence by thinking different thoughts.
Post-investment, the founders conducted a test with 25 users, each spending 90 minutes on various tasks, including playing a simple computer game, counting down from 1,000 by 7s, performing complex tasks, and simply thinking pleasant thoughts. AI is currently analyzing this data for insights.
Matilda's first commercial target is e-gamers, who can earn up to £3 million per year. The system aims to help them achieve maximum concentration before a game, increasing their chances of success. Egaming is a massive global industry with thousands of competitors, from university to national teams. In April, it was announced that the total prize money at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, starting in July, will be $60 million.
