More about Dirigo Sea Farm

Dirigo Sea Farm is a sustainable materials startup based in Kittery, Maine, specializing in the development of biodegradable bioplastic alternatives derived from kelp and seaweed. Operating at the intersection of marine farming and green chemistry, the company is addressing the global need for eco-friendly materials that replace traditional, petroleum-based polymers.

Its flagship product, the Laundry Pearl, is a single-use laundry pod made from a proprietary kelp bioplastic film. The pod is biodegradable, non-toxic, and entirely free of harmful chemicals such as parabens, sulfates, and phosphates. It offers a sustainable alternative to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based pods, which are known to contribute to microplastic pollution in water systems. By using naturally regenerative kelp, the product aligns with both environmental and health-conscious consumer values.

Dirigo Sea Farm targets a growing market of eco-conscious consumers seeking natural, plastic-free household products. Revenue is generated through direct-to-consumer sales via an online store and an on-site farm stand. The company’s vertically integrated model—from kelp cultivation to final product manufacturing—enables both traceability and control over environmental impact.

Founded by Alexa McGovern, a breast cancer survivor and experienced operator with a background in CPG manufacturing, brand marketing, and e-commerce software, the company is rooted in a mission to promote environmental health while revitalizing Maine’s heritage sea economy.

With early backing from the Maine Technology Institute and participation in the Roux Institute Founder Residency Program, Dirigo Sea Farm is positioned to scale production and launch its first major product line in 2025.
